Antioxidants Facts for Vitamins, Supplements, Health and Wellness

Antioxidants have been part of the dietary supplement jargon since the 1990s when clinical studies found that their use can prevent the formation of free radicals, molecules that break down cells and lead to cardiovascular disease and other conditions typically associated with poor diet and exercise. Antioxidants can be incorporated in the diet by eating foods high in vitamins A, C and E, along with shellfish and garlic high in selenium. Although we all have good intentions when it comes to eating right, sometimes our fast-paced lifestyle can sidetrack these plans; that's where dietary supplements can come in handy.

Olive leaf extract is the key ingredient in Allergy Research Group's Prolive with Antioxidants formulation. This supplement comes in tablet form and contains vitamins A, C and E, with beta carotene and selenium. A whole food form of supplement, also available in tablets, is Innate Response Formulas' Antioxidants, with blueberry, cranberry, ginger and rosemary. For a multi-vitamin, along with a full range of antioxidants, consider Women's MultiStart tablets from Natural Factors. You get the full spectrum of antioxidant protection, including vitamins A, B6 and B12, D, E and K, along with iron, magnesium and spirulina

For an easy-to-swallow capsule form, consider Pharmax's Endogenous Antioxidants & Cofactors formulation, with vitamins C and E, as well as selenium and manganese. Pharmax also offers their high potency Phyto Antioxidants in a vegetarian formulation with grape seed, green tea and pomegranate. Another vegan-friendly option comes from Pure Encapsulations in their AntiOxidant Formula with the free-form antioxidant n-acetyl-l-cysteine (NAC) that effectively blocks the formation of free radicals. Cherries also have antioxidant properties, and Enzymatic Therapy has a Cherry Fruit Extract in capsule form that is sugar-, gluten and dairy-free. Lipoic acid is another antioxidant that attacks free radicals, and Integrative Therapeutics offers this dietary supplement in a capsule formulation.

Fish oil is renowned for its high levels of Omega-3 fatty acids and their heart-healthy properties. Available in a pleasant-tasting citrus flavor, Eskimo-3® fish oil, from Enzymatic Therapy, has the highest level of these essential fatty acids, which have been shown to prevent cardiovascular disease. For an easy-to-take powder, which can be added to your favorite smoothie or green drink, consider their Energy Revitalization System with vitamins B and B12, along with folic acid and the energy-enhancing supplements: inositol and taurine. The powder comes in berry splash and tropical citrus flavors.
