Folic Acid Facts for Vitamins, Supplements, Health and Wellness

Gone are the days when folic acid was only used by women during pregnancy. Because of the latest advancements in science and technology, experts have found that folic acid can provide many more benefits to your body.

Folic acid is also known as folate. It is a water-soluble vitamin widely used as a supplement for pregnant women to prevent the occurrence of spina bifida and other defects of the neural tube.

Some doctors and healthcare practitioners will also recommend folate for occurrences of folic acid deficiency as a result of one or more of the following conditions:
  • pernicious anemia
  • liver disease
  • malabsorption syndrome (this happens when your intestines have decreased their ability to absorb food in your blood vessels)
  • hemodialysis of the kidney

Additionally, folic acid can benefit women who are reaching middle age. This is because folate is known to help prevent some diseases such as:

  • cerebrovascular accident (also known as stroke)
  • heart disease
  • cervical cancer
  • cancer of the colon

Folic acid can also help to prevent degenerative or age-related diseases. Some of these diseases include:
  • macular degeneration
  • hearing loss
  • dementia or Alzheimer's disease
  • osteoporosis

Other conditions that can be prevented and aided by folic acid are the following:

  • sleep problems such as insomnia and restless legs syndrome
  • depression
  • pain in the nerves
  • muscle pain
  • vitiligo
  • gingivitis (gum infections)

Also, folic acid can help provide an energy boost if you lack energy and feel tired. Folic acid is enhanced when taken with other B-vitamins, green leafy vegetables, fruits, beans and peas.
Take note that folic acid has its designated dosages for every condition but the typical dose is 250-1500 micrograms (mcg). Because of this, it is important to use folic acid only after speaking with your doctor or healthcare practitioner.
