Dehydroepiandrosterone is more popularly known by its short form,DHEA. DHEA is an important precursor to the male and female sex hormones and is made in the body by the adrenal gland. It is present in both men and women. However, production of DHEA reduces by the time people reach their 20s or post puberty, which can cause many problems in women, especially those who are not producing sufficient quantities of DHEA or whose adrenal glands are compromised in any way.
Women and DHEA
Unfortunately women tend to lose DHEA more rapidly than men and perhaps that is one of the reasons that women tend to look older faster. For those women who have hormonal problems at different times of their life, reduced production of DHEA can cause even more disorders, some of which may have nuisance value, while others may be serious. If you have low levels of DHEA, you may be suffering from
- Bone loss
- Muscle loss and weakness
- Tiredness or fatigue
- Libido problems
- Depression
- Joint pains
- Increased susceptibility to common diseases due to lowered immunity levels
- Lupus
- Obesity
- Cardiovascular problems
- Crohn’s disease
- Fertility problems
- Diabetes
- Kidney disease
And these are only some of the disorders linked to low levels of DHEA.
Why is DHEA so important?
As DHEA is the master hormone and the precursor to other necessary hormones in the body, if you take DHEA, the body can select how much of which hormone it needs to make and use the additional available DHEA to cover the shortfall. Any woman who is perimenopausal or has gone through menopause knows that lack of estrogen causes many problems. That is because female hormones give a range of benefits including good skin tone, better health, increased protection from cardiovascular problems, bone health and more.
DHEA is not available from food sources and has to be made in a lab and taken in the form of supplements. You can safely take supplements containing 25 mg. to 50 mg. of DHEA daily, though for some ailments higher doses can be taken.
