Amino Acids Facts for Vitamins, Supplements, Health and Wellness

Everybody knows that proteins are an essential component of a balanced and nutritionally rich diet.
Proteins are made up of twenty amino acids which are needed by the body. Of these nine – called essential amino acids – must be present in the food you eat.

What are the functions of amino acids?

Amino acids have an important role to play in the body. They are required for

  • making the protein complete so that it is bioavailable in the body
  • metabolic function
  • effective generation of neurotransmitters
  • assimilation of vitamins, minerals and other micro nutrients
  • skin, bone, cell, tissue and muscle repair and regeneration
  • promoting healing
  • their antioxidant properties

Amino acids are not stored in the body and that is why you need to take the essential amino acids every day. You may have heard of the terms complete protein and incomplete protein. When a protein is complete, it contains these components in the right proportion so that the protein is bioavailable in the body. Foods which offer incomplete protein lack the important amino acids.

Why you need supplements

Many women simply do not eat a balanced diet which gives them enough complete protein. Vegetarians and vegans are even more susceptible to shortages of essential amino acids. When you exercise, you need to take in more protein as well. Apart from that, lifestyles, stress, injury, surgery, infection, age, digestive disturbances, use of antacids can all contribute to the reduced availability of amino acids.

The essential ones are:
  • Histidine
  • Isoleucine
  • Leucine
  • Lysine
  • Methionine
  • Phenylalanine
  • Threonine
  • Tryptophan
  • Valine
Do you know whether or not you are getting all the nutrients in the right proportion from your daily diet? Are you certain that you eat fresh, nutritional food which offers good nutritive value? Are you always in the best of health and do not have any health problems?

If even one essential amino acid is not available in the body via the food you eat or it is not available in a sufficient quantity, you can face many unnecessary health problems as these essential components have to be in a delicate balance to carry out all the necessary functions. That is why it may be a good idea to take amino acids in a supplement form. Taking a supplement may also offer many therapeutic benefits.
