Digestive Health Facts for Vitamins, Supplements, Health and Wellness

It’s a picture perfect evening with your special someone, delicious food, a glass of wine and great conversation . . . until it’s cut short because your stomach rebels. It doesn’t matter if its indigestion, acid reflux, cramps and bloating or diarrhea, it destroys the moment; and it’s the symptom of a digestive system that needs your attention. About 60-70 million people are affected by digestive disorders each year. They’re not just an inconvenience, they are a call to action.

The digestive system relies on the exacting actions of an elaborate set of muscles, organs and chemicals released by the brain to extract essential nutrients, but it happens so automatically we rarely give it a second thought. But poor digestion literally leaves your body and immune system starved for good health.

There are more ways than can be listed here for digestion to go wrong. Stress or eating in a hurry can compromise the amount and kind of acids released from your brain to the digestive system. Because the brain emits only enough acid to break down the food that has been thoroughly chewed, you can be sure if you eat your food too quickly, much of it will be left to rot in our stomach, wasting essential nutrients. When you eat too much, you overburden the ability of your system to process all that’s there.

But there are simple things you can do to improve your digestive health:

  • Eat a rainbow of whole foods to give your system adequate nutrients to extract. That is, avoid fatty, sugary, highly processed foods that fill you up but rob you of good nutrition.
  • Drink water or better still, chew your water. Eating green and leafy vegetables and a variety of fruits not only give you amazing nutrients, but their water content makes digestion more efficient. Avoid drinking water with your meal though so you don’t dilute stomach acids from doing their work.
  • Eat garlic and onions to help improve digestion and reduce the amount of oil from the foods you eat.
  • Avoid conventional over-the-counter medicines that address stomach symptoms but can actually make digestive functioning worse.
  • Consider an enzyme supplement to improve an aging digestive system
  • Consult your doctor with chronic digestive problems to assure you are checked for more serious digestive ailments like allergies, diverticulitis and inflammatory bowel syndrome.
