Fructooligosaccharide, also known as FOS, is a short-chain fructose molecule. FOS is used in commercial industry as an alternative sweetener, because it is about 50 times sweeter than regular sugar syrups such as HFCS (high fructose corn syrup). Its minimal caloric value and low glycemic index prevents metabolic stress on your body.
This carbohydrate stays relatively unbroken (undigested) until it reaches your intestines, where gut flora will then feed on it and break it down. For this reason, many people consume FOS to improve their gastrointestinal health and regularity. In scientific studies, it is shown to increase digestive enzyme activity. This classifies FOS as a prebiotic: a supplemental source of digestive bacterial growth that benefits digestion. Just as a probiotic regulates the balance of gut flora, a prebiotic stimulates the growth and development of gut flora.
There are many FOS-containing sugar substitutes available for purchase that are of great benefit to diabetics, those who are consuming minimal amounts of sugar, and even supplements to aid in digestive health. Yacon syrup, probiotic capsules, and powdered chicory all contain Fructooligosaccharides.
Many nutrition enthusiasts promote the usage of FOS for natural health and wellness because they are also present in whole foods, such as bananas, chicory, yacon, leeks, wheat, barley, asparagus, and onions. You receive the same benefits from supplements when consuming these foods on a smaller scale.
Because this short-chain molecule stays mostly undigested until it arrives in the intestines, it can cause gas and bloating. The gut flora feed on FOS and this activity stimulates gaseous symptoms. Most people can safely consume 30 grams daily without discomfort, however, it is best to monitor your reactions to any amount as it can vary from person to person. Those who suffer from IBS or food allergies often have a disrupted gut flora, so consuming FOS may be harmful and elevate the gastrointestinal symptoms. Introduce any Fructooligosaccharide supplement in increments to prevent any uncomfortable side effects.
If you are pregnant, be watchful of any symptoms when consuming FOS as well, though it is generally recognized as safe by the FDA.
